Our approach · Seeing your child's growth

A clear picture of how your child is growing

Daily updates tell you how your child's day went. The Skill Passport shows you how they're developing: what they can do now, what they're ready to try next, and how we're working with you to get there.

Years of development

From first steps to early maths

Observations every week

In everyday play, in every room

Shared every quarter

With time to talk it through

From babies to kinder

One record that grows with your child

What it is

Your child's record of growth

The Skill Passport is a record of your child's development across seven areas, built from real observations during play — not tests. It starts from the baby room and travels with your child all the way to kinder.

You'll also see how observation shapes your child's experiences: how we set up learning, the way we extend what your child is already curious about, and the plan for what they try next.

Example, in Term 4

Fridays and friendships

"Fridays are great. My mum told me we're starting kinder next year, and I'm going to be ready. I want to make sure I make friends there — is that what makes some friendships easier than others?"

Now
Names her friends, and talks about what makes a good friend.
Next
Talking about how to support friends who move away.
Shared
Discussed at the term catch-up, with ideas to try at home.

How it works

From everyday moments to a clear picture

  1. 1

    We observe

Educators notice and follow your child's play, tuning in to what they're curious about and how they approach new ideas.

  2. 2

    We record

Short notes, photos and work samples capture what your child said and did, in the moment.

  3. 3

    We look across seven areas

Every observation is linked to one of seven development areas, so patterns and progress show over time.

  4. 4

We share and plan with you

Every quarter, we review your child's passport, sit down with you, and set goals together for the months ahead.

Seven areas

What we look at

Every week, every room, educators plan for and observe these seven areas:

Thinking and discovery

Problem solving, sorting, patterns, early maths and science thinking.

Words and language skills

Listening, talking, stories, new vocabulary, and early reading.

Moving and growing

Big movements like climbing and balancing, and small hand skills like drawing and threading.

Feelings and friendships

Naming feelings, managing big emotions, and building friendships with others.

Independence and confidence

Self-care routines, toileting, helping others, and speaking up for what they need.

Forms and readiness

Recognising and making shapes, numbers, and how letters and sounds work together.

Senses and expression

Exploring with the senses, and expressing ideas through music, art, dance and imaginary play.

Every observation links to one of these areas — so you can see patterns, not just moments.

Growth, not grades.

What it isn't

It's not a test, and it's not a race

Child development is uneven, messy, and different across every area of growth. Progress in one area doesn't set the pace in another — and it's rarely a straight line.

In the passport, and when we sit down with you, we'll talk about how your child is going and what's emerging next. If there's anything you'd like to work on together, we can always approach it as a team.

You'll find all updates

When it lands

Moving rooms, and starting school

The Skill Passport is how we show where your child is ready for the next room and what's still developing. It moves with them, so nothing gets lost between rooms.

In kinder, it helps us talk with you about school readiness well before Prep. Every kinder child leaves with a transition statement to share with their school.
